At Grove school, children experience a wide range of sports which help to enhance the children's physical, social and mental health. All classes have two PE lessons a week with children in years 3 and 4 learning to swim and water safety skills. The PE curriculum at Grove allows children to learn fundemental movments in EYFS and KS1. As children move into KS2, these skills are then applied in lessons and competitive sport.

This year Grove School have offered a sporting opportunity to every child from Nursery to Year 6.
Through the use of our sport premium budget we have been able to provide children with equipment, resources, coaching and trips to enhance their curriculum and provide opportunities to compete in sports. Have a look below at the examples of school sporting activities.

In the summer term children in nursery have explored shapes using their body to form number shapes up to 20.
Children explored body percussion, using their body to make music and sounds.
Children can concentrate and follow instructions when paying starter games, using different resources, hoops, beanbags, cones.

This half term, Nursery have been learning how to dance. We have been learning how to control our movements and use our emotions to express ourselves. Children played follow the leader and insturctional games as part of their dance movements. The children enjoyed using pom poms and dance resources in these lessons and on the playground.

This term, children in Nursery have continued their body mangement topic for PE. Children have developed on skill learned in Autumn 1 and are now taking part in balancing and co-ordination games. The Nursery children are enjoying playing Sky divers.

In the Summer term, Reception have been exploring more ways to move thier bodies. The children have been creating shapes and learning to climb over and under obstecles. The children can talk about how this makes their body feel and what they found easy or tircky.

This half term, Reception have continued learning from Nursery in dance. We have been learning how to control our movements and use our emotions to express ourselves using colours. Children played insturctional games as part of their dance movements. The children enjoyed using pom poms and dance resources in these lessons and on the playground. Reception children are able to talk about using space, colours and their bodies

Body Management
This half term, children in Reception have been learning to control their movements and follow instructions in PE. Children have developed their gross motor skills by changing thier clothing for Pe, moving around a space and controlling large objects like balls. Children in Reception are beginning to learn how to move onto, over and around apparatus.

In the summer term, Year 1 have started their Run, Jump and Throw topic as part of their study in athletics. The children have explored how to use their body to run faster and jump further.
In our attack, defend, shoot topic, the children have been using skills learned earlier in the year in order to play small sided games. The children enjoyed being competitive in thier lessons.

Dance
This half term, Year 1 have been learning how to dance. We have used the jungle book as a stimulous for our movements. Children in year 1 told stories through their dancing and could talk about their favourite part of the book and how it made them feel. Year 1 began to sequence their dance with a start and end point.

This term, Year 2 have started their study of athletics in their Run, Jump, Throw topic. The children have developed skills learned in year 1 and now know how to run faster and jump further using their athletic skills. The children are looking forward to showing these skills at sports day.
In our attack, defend, shoot topic, the children have been using learning from earlier in the year to take part in small sided games. The children are using throwing and catching skills to be able to attack and defend an area.

This half term, Year 2 have been learning how to dance. We have used penguins as stimulous for our dance. The children looked at how penguins moved and turned these movemnets into dancing skills. Year 2 improved upon skills from Year 1 by exploring the use of cannon, unison and levels in their routines. Yar 2 have continued their learning from last half term in our Hit, Catch, Run topic. The children are using thier skills to become better cricketers.

This term, Year 3 have continued their swimming work. The children are all progressing well towards thier swimming targets, aiming for 25m by the end of Year 4.
In athletics, children have developed skills learned in year 2 and are now able select different styles of jumps in order to gain distance and height. The children explored hopping and stepping techniques as well as starting push and pull throws.

This half term, Year 3 have been learning how to dance. We used The Roald Dahl's Matilda as a stimulous for our work. We looked at examples of the Matilda stage production and replicated a box square dance.
In Swimming, children are working towards their swimming badges. The children recieve thier awards in assemblies each week.

This half term, Year 3 have been learning to use their throwing and catching skills in Basketball. The children have also started their swimming lessons with a number of children achieving thier first swimming certificates.

This term, Year 4 have continued their swimming work. The children are all progressing well towards thier swimming targets, aiming for 25m by the end of Year 4.
In athletics, the children have developed skills learned in Year 3 and KS1. The children are now using the skills learned purposefully in their lessons in order to gain height and distance. Children have begun to measure and record performances and are discussing how to make their performance better.

This half term, Year 4 have been learning how to dance. We used theme of spies as a stimulous for our work. We developed our skills in years 2 and 3 and began to dance in formation with cannon and unison. We also explored the concept of freeze frames within our routine.

This half term year 5 have been studying athletics and cricket. In athletics the year 5 children have been developing skill learned last year in order to run, jump and throw to a higher standard. The children then used the STEP principle to design their own activities. See below the relay activity in one of our classes.
The children in year 5 have also been treated to expert coahcing from Warwickshire county cricket through the Chance to shine program. The children have enjoyed developing their skills of cricket in these lessons.

This half term, Year 5 have been learning how to dance. We used Bollywood as a stimulous for our work. We looked at examples of the Bollywood dancers and explored dancing in locomotion and non-locomotive ways. The children are able to talk about formation and analyse movements based upon the space they have.
Tag Rugby is new to year 5 and the children have been exploring how to send and recieve a ball of a different shape. Children have used skills learned in KS1 and lower KS2 to find the best way to move around a space. Year 5 have enjoyed exploring a new sport and learning the rules to go with it.

In Autumn, children in Year 5 have been learning Hockey and Netball. The children have developed sending and recieving skills which have been learnt in previous years. Year 5 are beginning to learn the basic rules of the sports and are starting to self evaluate thier performances.

Year 5 have been developing skills learned in year 4 and have begun to explore how to improve thewir sequences and provide feedback to their peers. Year 5 have used their gymnastic skills in small groups to create partner and group sequences.

Year 6 have been studying athletics this half term.The children are using their skills purposefully to run in relay races. The children are then able to apply skills learnt to give feedback and coach each other. The children enjoyed working as a team in Parlauff relay races.

This half term, Year 6 have been learning how to dance. We used The Mouri Hakka as a stimulous for our work. We looked at examples of the Hakkas and Siva Taus and explored the cultural meanings behind them. The children are able to use body tension to convey emotion in their dance.
Children develop skills learned in year 5 in their Tag Rugby lessons. Children learnt more of the more complex rules of rugby such as Knock on. Year 6 were then able to explore effective ways to attack and defend a position. Children enjoyed playing the role of a coach to help their peers.

Children in Year 6 have been learning Hockey and Netball. The children have developed sending and recieving skills which have been learnt in previous years. Year 6 are confident with the rules of the sport and are now evaluating their own and peers performances.

In Autumn , year 6 have been developing skills learned across the school by creating sequences wich involve multiple movement patterns. The children have then evaluated their performances and the performances of others. The children are able to provide feedback and coaching to each other based upon difficulty and Gymnastic aesthetics.
Year 6 have also been looking at real life gymnasts such as Simone Biles and Birmingham based Joe Fraser.
