PE at Grove

 

At Grove school, children experience a wide range of sports which help to enhance the children's physical, social and mental health. All classes have two PE lessons a week with children in years 3 and 4 learning to swim and water safety skills. The PE curriculum at Grove allows children to learn fundemental movments in EYFS and KS1. As children move into KS2, these skills are then applied in lessons and competitive sport.

After School Sports Clubs and Sporting Opportunities.

This year Grove School have offered a sporting opportunity to every child from Nursery to Year 6. 

Through the use of our sport premium budget we have been able to provide children with equipment, resources, coaching and trips to enhance their curriculum and provide opportunities to compete in sports. Have a look below at the examples of school sporting activities.

This term, children in Nursery have continued their body mangement topic for PE. Children have developed on skills learned throughout the term and are now taking part in balancing and co-ordination games.

This half term, children in Nursery have been learning how to control their body and their limbs. Children have explored moving objects such as balls, balloons and cones using different parts of their bodies. Children are able to kick, throw and jump over apparatus in a controlled way. The children have enjoyed exploring different ways in much to move manipulative resources.

This term, children in Reception have been learning to control their movements and follow instructions in PE. Children have developed their gross motor skills by changing thier clothing for Pe, moving around a space and controlling large objects like balls. Children in Reception are beginning to learn how to move onto, over and around apparatus.

This term, Year 1 have been learning co-ordination skills in PE.  The children have been exploring different ways to move a ball. In gymnastics, year 1 have been learning balancing and travelling skills. The children are able to control body movements using locomotion.

During the Spring, Year 1 have been learning to attack and defend a target in team games. The children have developed skills from EYFS by moving manipulatives towards a target. The children explored finding space and moving safely around their area. 

Year 1 were also pleased to welcome Aspire Sports into school to teach the children how to balance on balance bikes. These bikes have no pedels so all of the movement comes from the children's ability to balace on the bike. Year 1 loved zooming around the hall during these lessons.

This term, Year 2 have been learning to use a variety of sending and recieveing skills in PE. Children have developed on skills from Year 1 by focusing on the best ways to send and recieve a ball. Year 2 have also explored gymnastics. In these lessons, children have developed balance and co-ordination and are starting to use these skills in a small sequece. Children have been using appareatus safely and are able to keep themselves and others safe in their lessons.

This term year 2 have been learning problem solving skills in their PE lessons through Outdoor education. The children have been working in small teams to over come physical challenges and have been working collaberatively. 

In their Attack, Defend and Shoot topic, year 2 have been exploring game based situations which require agility, balance and co-ordination. The children have enjoyed using their skills learned in year 1 in these games.  

 

 

Year 3

Year 3 have started their first unit of expressive sport. The children have developed skills learned in year 2 and are now making longer sequences with more complex movements. In basketball, year 3 have been learning to attack and defend. During our swimming lessons, many children are working towards our target of 25m without armbands.

Year 3 have developed skills learned in Basketball and have been practicing using agility and balance alongside attacking and defending skills. Children has been exposed to lots of game situations in order to help them improve their spatial awareness skills. 

Children in year 3 are making excellent progress in their swimming. Keep a look out for your child's swimming certificates which come home each half term.

This term, Year 4 have continued their swimming learning from year 3 with more children showing success towards their swimming certificates. 

In Gymnastics, the children are now performing long sequences using the skills they have learnt in previous years. Children are perfoming their sequences to the class and have given feedback on their own performance. Children in year 4 are working on creating more complex movements in their sequences including cartwheels.

In Handball this half term, Year 4 have been learning the basic rules of the sport. During these lessons, children have had the opportunity to use spatial awareness and agility skills learned in year 3. The children are starting to use tactics and game plans in their work. 

Year 4 are continuing their swimming learning from year 3 with more children showing success towards their swimming certificates. Look out for your child's certificate at the end of each half term.

Year 5 have been developing skills learned in year 4 and have begun to explore how to improve thewir sequences and provide feedback to their peers. Year 5 have used their gymnastic skills in small groups to create partner and group sequences. In Autumn, children in Year 5 have been learning Hockey and Netball. The children have developed sending and recieving skills which have been learnt in previous years. Year 5 are beginning to learn the basic rules of the sports and are starting to self evaluate thier performances.

This term, year 5 have had the opportunity to work with Warwickhshire County Cricket to improve our cricket skills and team work. The children enjoyed working with expert coaches Raj and Luke. 

In Dance, year 5 have completed their Bollywood study. During this time, children learnt to create their own Bollywood dances, line dances and critiqued each other in order to make improvements. 

In Tag Rugby, year 5 started their journey in learning the rules before they move to Year 6 and secondary school. Whilst exploring the basic rules of rugby the children worked on their passing skills.

In Autumn , year 6 have been developing skills learned across the school by creating sequences wich involve multiple movement patterns. The children have then evaluated their performances and the performances of others. The children are able to provide feedback and coaching to each other based upon difficulty and Gymnastic aesthetics. In hockey and netball, the children have developed sending and recieving skills which have been learnt in previous years. Year 6 are confident with the rules of the sport and are now evaluating their own and peers performances.

The children in year 6 have enjoyed thir topics this term in PE. In rounders the children learned the rules of the game as well as tactical knowledge of where to stand in the midfield. The children have played their own tournaments and managed themselves successfully in teams. 

In handball, the children have been excited to add new rules into their game. Year 6 are able to work with each other to self referee and govern their own matches.
